Commission has tough message for Romania
01.03.2005 - 09:59 CET
Romania appears to be on schedule to become a full member of the EU, but the European Commission will not hesitate to take measures if it falls behind on its commitments, was the message delivered by the Commission in Bucharest on Monday.(28 February).
After meeting Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Razvan Mihai Ungureanu, Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said, "there was an encouraging beginning, which proves that the new government (...) has planned certain strategies. But these must soon turn into actual results. They must not remain engagements", Romanian Bucharest Daily News reported.
The Commissioner added that Brussels was watching Romania closely and hoped to see "some concrete results and progress", particularly concerning the judicial system and local administration, competition and the fight against corruption.
The European Commission will continue to monitor Romania
until the end of the year, when a detailed report on the country's preparation for accession will be made.
Romanian Foreign Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu said he did not doubt that the signature of the Accession Treaty, planned for 25 April, would take place on time.
Commissioner Rehn's visit to Romania followed a statement by German Christian Democrats, led by MEP Markus Ferber, published last week in the German press, that Romania's integration process should be frozen because of the "general corruption" in the country.
Mr Rehn's visit was not related to the MEPs' statements, said Mr Ungureanu.
Later on Monday, Romanian President Traian Basescu reacted by saying his country would no longer accept "being labelled as corrupt".
The European Commission approved the accession bids by Romania and Bulgaria on 22 February.
Both countries are due to sign the Accession Treaty, which lays out the terms of membership, on 25 April and become EU
members on 1 January 2007.
