Subject: Please Help ACT Identify Organizations to Include in Our Research
Project on Career Opportunities in International Peace and Conflict
Resolution

Dear Members of the ACT Forums :

The Alliance for Conflict Transformation is conducting an
applied research project on career opportunities in the field of
international peace and conflict resolution (funded by a seed
grant from AICPR, www.aicpr.org).

The research involves two stages:

Stage I: Surveying academic departments to assess how
they prepare their students for careers in our field.

Stage II: Surveying employers to assess the particular
types of positions they are offering and the types of skills
they seek in their employees.

We have largely completed the first stage of research and are
beginning Stage II. In the second phase of this study, we are
surveying current or potential employers (who focus on
international issues) of individuals with peace and conflict
resolution skills. This includes peace and conflict resolution
organizations, as well as organizations in related fields
(development, humanitarian relief, public health.), government
agencies, consulting firms, foundations, think tanks, etc., who
seek individuals with some expertise in conflict resolution as
part of the required skill set. The goal of the second phase is
to ascertain what skills employers seek related to peace and
conflict resolution, what are the career paths available to
graduates, and recommendations employers have for individuals
seeking employment in this field.

Now we are writing to ask for your assistance in two ways.

Participate in the Research - If your organization is willing
to participate in the research please let us know.

Provide Recommendations for Other Organizations/Contacts C If
you have recommendations for individuals to contact at other
organizations working in the conflict resolution field we would
welcome any suggestions.

We hope to interview one senior program staff member at each
organization who is familiar with the conflict resolution field
and has some influence over the organizations hiring (if needed
we may also interview human resources staff). The research
involves a brief online survey (about 20 minutes) followed up by
a more in-depth phone survey (about 30 minutes). We will be
conducting interviews in March and April. We primarily focusing
on US based organizations in this phase of the research but
would be welcome to including some overseas institutions.

The results of the research project will be published and,
available on our website (or in hard copy) in late spring. It
will illustrate the diverse nature of career opportunities open
to individuals interested in international peace and conflict
resolution. We believe that this will help fill a critical gap
given the relatively new nature of this profession and the
growing interest in pursuing careers in this area.

The research project is being led by Dr. Craig Zelizer, Senior
Partner, Alliance for Conflict Transformation (email
[EMAIL PROTECTED], tel. (703-461-3650) and Dr.
Linda Johnston, Visiting Assistant Professor, Institute for
Conflict Analysis and Resolution, George Mason University. If
your organization might be willing to participate in this phase
of the research or if you can recommend people at other
organizations, please let either of us know via email or phone.

We would appreciate if you could get back to us by March 30,
2005. Also, please feel free to contact us if you have questions
about the research.

Also, please feel free to contact us if you have questions about
the research.

Thank you for your help

Sincerely,

Craig Zelizer & Linda Johnston
