SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) - Romania and Bulgaria pledged on Thursday to
smooth out what they described as ``tiny'' bilateral problems by 2007,
when the two Balkan neighbors hope to join the European Union.
``There are a few issues ... and we should set a deadline for their
solution so that the two countries do not take the bilateral problems of
their past to the European Union,'' Romanian Prime Minister Calin
Popescu Tariceanu told a news conference after talks with his Bulgarian
counterpart, Simeon Saxcoburggotski.
Tariceanu said the problems included differences over the delineation of
the continental shelf between the two countries in the Black Sea,
minority issues, and customs procedures at border crossings.
He refused to be drawn into details, saying the issues were ``awaiting
consideration.''
Saxcoburggotski, however, described them as ``tiny administrative and
other problems,'' and pledged to make every effort to reach agreement
with Romania.
In a joint statement, Tariceanu and Saxcoburggotski said their
governments will join efforts ``to ensure parallel accession to the EU
in accordance with the timetable,'' which set January 2007 as the target
date for their EU entry.
Bulgaria and Romania are scheduled to sign their common accession treaty
with the EU on April 25, but Brussels has warned both countries to speed
up key reforms or see their entry delayed by a year.
In Sofia, the two prime ministers also agreed to speed up work on major
infrastructure projects, such as the construction of a new bridge across
the Danube River and of a new gas pipe linking the Caspian Sea with
central Europe.
