France Decision on EU Constitution "Crucial" for Bulgaria, Romania
2005-04-28
Should France reject the European Union constitution Bulgaria and Romania's entry into the block would be postponed, German Tageszeitung reported.

Latest surveys show that Euro skeptics in France outnumber the supporters of the Euro constitution.

Tageszeitung says that little is known about Bulgaria and Romania and they mostly referred to with clichs. Dracula, Black Sea, mobsters and begging children are all associated with Bulgaria and Romania. And though 20 months are a long time they could pass very quickly, the newspaper says referring to the future entry of the countries in 2007.

Most of the EU countries fear the enlargement, as it will change the block much more than the first wave did as it really united Europe, whereas Bulgaria and Romania will open the door for Turkey's entry, the German newspaper comments.

Bulgaria and Romania have a different history, based on the Orthodoxy that has its roots in the Byzantium Empire centered in Constantinople, known today as Istanbul. Bulgaria with its 8 million people population is seen as a center of the Slavic Orthodoxy, while the Romanian Orthodox Church with its 20 million pilgrims is the second in the world. And though the young people are western orientated, their cultural self-awareness is still linked to their Orthodox traditions.

The two countries will definitely enrich Europe with their new traditions and culture, the newspaper also claims. The European strategists have surely considered it well. If Bulgaria and Romania manage to successfully integrate, Turkey will be the next. The article says that Bulgaria and Romania are heirs of the Ottoman Empire that lays in the history of Turkey.
