Eastern European workers good for UK
29.04.2005 - 09:58 CET | By Lucia Kubosova

One year after enlargement, there is no evidence in the UK of "hordes of benefit-seekers" but rather a number of "valuable workers".

Britain, Ireland and Sweden are the only three "old" EU countries without any temporary ban on workers from new central and east European members.

In the run up to last year's enlargement, there were worries - sparked by the tabloid press - about a possible influx of citizens from new member states, mainly interested in receiving social benefit allowances.

But media reports indicate that fears over social security tourism did not materialise.

On the other hand, there has been a significant increase of migrant workers in the countries which opened up their labour markets.

In the UK, some 7 per cent of British employers have hired workers from new Europe, according to Manpower, one of the world's biggest recruitment agencies.

The British Home Office said that 133,000 people from the eight eastern European accession countries applied to work in the UK between May 2004 and the end of last year, FT reports.

The number is higher than previously projected by the British government, but small in comparison with the total number of workers and available vacancies in the UK last year.

The main destination for migrant workers was London, with immigrants mainly filling the gaps in hotels, restaurants and on construction sites.
