Principalul cotidian egiptean Al-Ahram, a publicat un dosar de 30 de
pagini al doctorului Salim Al Awaa, intitulat "Circumcizia femeii asa
cum este vazuta ea in Islam"

Cairo, 9 January 2005 - The main Egyptian daily, Al-Ahram, published
a thirty-page dossier of Doctor Salim Al Awaa entitled ''Female
Circumcision as seen by Islam.'' It cites authoritative sheikhs to
demonstrate the lack of any link between the Koran and female genital
mutilation. It condemns this practice since it is ''founded in
popular traditions contrary to the physical and psychological health
of women, whose sexuality is accepted by the Koran.'' This represents
a turning-point in the 20 year battle against female genital
mutilation. ''Only five years ago, speaking of it was taboo,
practicing it was normal, its spread was underestimated, and even
many feminists were unaware of it; today, something is happening,
something that before I would have thought impossible,'' said
Moushira Khattab, Secretary-General of the Egyptian National Council
for Childhood and Motherhood. ''The news does not end there,'' added
Emma Bonino, ''television and other Egyptian media are talking more
and more often and openly about this, and the campaign has spread
from Egypt to the whole region. Ever since the Cairo Conference in
June 2003, things have been moving very quickly.''
