Bucharest will not be the same after herds of
decorated cows stampede through the city! Imagine grazing bovines in front of
Casa Poporului, a lounging cow in the middle of Piata Charles de Gaulle,
brightly painted cows lazily strolling through Cismigiu Park. Let loose the
child in you, and, no matter your age, join us at the world's largest public art
event taking place for the first time in Eastern Europe!

Since CowParade first began in the late 1990's as a charitable public art event,
thousands of bovines have served as blank canvases, with a dizzying, imaginative
array of art appearing in cities around the world. This summer it is Eastern
Europe's turn to host the mooo-ing creatures, and Bucharest is one of the lucky
city's to have been chosen as a host.
Created in 1998 in Zurich, Switzerland (land of
probably the most beautiful cows in Europe), the CowParade has been a success
since its first edition. Designed to sponsor charitable causes, by bringing
culture to the public, the parade's main idea is to link various categories of
public and generate special interest and financial support for valuable causes;
having a cow as the central artistic image.
Local and international artists will paint, sculpt, draw, smartly attire and re-engineer these placid creatures into forms never before seen. Bucharest will become one of only 25 cities that have hosted CowParades around the world. Between June 1st and September 12th 2005, more than 100 bovine beauties will invade Bucharest's streets and parks.
?With the enthusiastic support of Bucharest city officials and the newly-elected government, our colorful, creative and crafty creatures will most definitely charm their way into your hearts?, said officials from Event Horizon, the organizers of CowParade Bucharest 2005. ?Get Involved!? was the slogan they presented to Bucharesters when the parade was launched.
The CowParade program involves artists, sponsors, public and investors alike.
In addition to Bucharest, several other cities around the world, including Sao Paolo, Barcelona, Monaco, Warsaw, Bratislava, Moscow, Mexico City, and Florence, will be hosting the ruminants' Parade, starting in June and ending in September.
What is it all about?
Essentially, over 100 three-dimensional fiberglass
bovine-shaped artifacts will be redesigned, painted or artistically
reconstructed by various artists. Worldwide over the last five years, over 3,000
artists, coming in all shapes and sizes, have loaned their imaginative skills to
CowParades,. From the amateur to the professional, classical artists, painters,
fashion designers, architects and engineers, all who are interested in
contributing, are invited. ?There are no CVs required, no letters of reference,
just a desire, a design and a dream?, said Lestat Monroe, head of the parade
artist committee.
While the cow sculptures remain the same, each city's artists are challenged by the art from past events inspired by the cultural influences of their respective cities, and moved by their own interpretation of the cow as an art object. According to the organizers however, CowParade is not meant to be high-class art. It is first and foremost, a public art exhibit that is accessible to everyone.
During this time, anybody can sponsor and be a patron of the creation of such a parading artistic cow. ?Starting at 5,000 Euro, local and international firms, NGOs, associations, groups of friends, schools, individuals - anyone can be a patron of CowParade Bucharest 2005?, says Michele Lagueux, head of the CowParade 2005 sponsoring committee.
The bovine will bear its patron's name or logo during its public exposure until the end, when all the parade participants will be auctioned, cow by cow, and sold to the highest bidder in the CowParade 2005 closing ceremony, on September 12th.
CowParade had over 300 individual media spots during CowParade London 2002. Not bad for a bunch of grass-grazing animals! This year's edition in Bucharest has partnered up with several media outlets: newsprints, magazines, radio, television and the internet. There is even international coverage, the organizers proudly boast. And there is little reason not to take part in this charitable initiative when you know who will benefit in the end.
Raising Moo-lah!
?Let me Win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave
in the attempt.? This is the motto of Special Olympics, and is a globally known
motto. Special Olympics Romania is the official charity of CowParade Bucharest
2005, and it will benefit from proceeds raised at the September cow auction, as
well as from the exposure and the publicity of CowParade. These special athletes
with disabilities enjoy the athletic training, the socialization and the team
spirit created by this very special organization.
Uptown, downtown, underground: The cows will be everywhere! Beginning June 1st 2005 through the middle of September 2005, locals and tourists alike will laugh, smile, point and find a new reason to roam the summer streets of Bucharest. On September 12th 2005, a number of the hand-decorated cows will go to auction. 75% of the proceeds will go to the Special Olympics Romania fund.
Cow Care
Now, if a cow is loved too much or suffers from any
illnesses, it will be whisked away to the Cow Hospital in a ?cow-bulance? where
it will be lovingly cared for quickly returned to its adoring public. The
artists' studio and Cow Hospital are open to the public and the media. Please
