Liviu Ciulei, one of the greatest personalities in Romanian theater and cinema, celebrated his 82nd birthday yesterday. Born in 1923, Ciulei graduated from the Dramatic Art Conservatoire and then the Architecture School and started his career as a stage designer when he was 23. His career developed into one of the most prestigious in the arts world as he directed and acted in important plays in Romanian and international theater, by writers ranging from Shakespeare to Ibsen and Romanian playwright I.L. Caragiale. The films he directed include "Padurea Spanzuratilor" (The Forest of the Hanged) for which he was awarded a Palme D'Or at Cannes in 1965. He was director at the Bulandra Theater between 1963 and 1972, at the Lincoln Center in New York and at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis between 1981 and 1986. He was a professor at various universities in the U.S. and Germany and a correspondent member of the Romanian Academy. His long list of awards and distinctions also includes a Tony award for his activity at the Guthrie Theater, the Saint Olav medal granted by the Norwegian King Saint Olav in 1983 for his staging of Ibsen's "Peer Gynt" and two Romanian Theatrical Union (UNITER) awards.
