CALL FOR PAPERS

The Doctoral school in Social Sciences of Bucharest,
in collaboration
with the Group of Socio-Political Analysis of Central
and Eastern
European Countries (GASPPECO) from the Université
Libre de Bruxelles
and the Faculty of Political Science, University of
Bucharest will
organise on November 11th, 2005 a conference on the
topic “Political
and social actors in Central and Eastern Europe”.

One of the main characteristics of the transformation
of political and
economic systems in Central and Eastern Europe after
1989 is the
simultaneous emergence of political parties and social
actors.
Political
parties have been particularly privileged by the
scholarly community,
while the studies on social actors followed the rhythm
of their
development. Within this framework, general or more
detailed case
studies were conducted on different topics, as for
example the
emergence
of trade unions and employers’ associations, interest
groups or
non-governmental organisations. A particular attention
has also been
paid to the process of the EU enlargement with regard
to the strategies
of these domestic actors. These studies, that provide
better
information
concerning political and social landscapes form
Central and Eastern
Europe, invite however, 15 years after the beginning
of the
transformations, to make an assessment about the
nature of these actors
and to enlarge the research agenda on this topic.

The conference launches the debate around several main
issues:

· Is there a specific model of structuring in
the case of the
partisan landscapes, interest groups or NGOs from
Central and Eastern
Europe?

· Which are the convergence and divergence with
western models?

· Is there a specific model existing in Central
and Eastern
Europe and what are its main features?

· Do similar trends can be revealed in the case
of political
parties, trade unions or interest groups?

Contributions should articulate around these main
questions.

The deadline for sending the propositions is the 1st
of October 2005.

Propositions should be sent to Jean-Michel De Waele
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and to Cristian
Preda ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

The organisers do not take in charge the cost of stay
of the
participants but may propose hotels at a moderate
price. The main
working language is French, but relevant contributions
in English will
also be accepted.
