Call for Partners that deal SPECIFICALLY with Women Prisoners:
Research recognises that the first 10 days at the beginning of a
prison sentence is when women inmates are at their most vulnerable.
Additionally, it has also been recognised that many prison staff
lack the necessary training and expertise to ensure that the
transition from the outside world to a prison environment is
supportive and as far as feasible stress free.
Underlying the issues surrounding the induction of prisoners into a
secure environment is the fact that over 50% of all prisoners are at
or below the level of an 11 year old in reading, 66% in numeracy and
80% in literacy and that half of all prisoners do not have the
skills required by 96% of jobs so their opportunities for future
employment are low while the possibility of re-offending is high.
`The First Ten Days - Supporting Women, with a mental or physical
disability, in Prisons' aims to do just that by:
· Conducting an initial survey into the treatment of women
prisoners, with mental and/or physical disabilities, during their
induction into the prison system in partnership countries
· The development of training materials for prison staff based
on needs identified by the survey and through partner
expertise: `The First Ten Days: Induction Strategies for Women
Prisoners'. This will include language acquisition skills for to
enhance communication with non English speakers.
· The sharing of good practice within the European community
regarding support and training for women prisoners leading to the
development of a CD-Rom consisting of training materials created to
promote the level of basic numeracy, literacy and communication for
women.
The Foundation for European Initiatives is now seeking organisations
with specific interest and expertise with Women Prisoners to partner
them in this Leonardo Da Vinci Pilot Project Application.
