Ambassador Taubman Visits The UNHCR Camp In Timisoara

U.S. Ambassador to Romania, Nicholas Taubman, visited the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) Refugee Camp in Timisoara today, where he met some of the Uzbek refugees hosted here. Ambassador Taubman was met by Colonel Livius Bisca, director of the refugee camp, and Nargisa Desmetova, UNHCR field officer, who gave him an overview of the camp’s facilities.

Addressing Colonel Biscu, Ambassador Taubman said: “There comes a time in the life of every country when the right thing has to be done. Romania’s decision to shelter the Uzbek refugees was such a moment. On behalf of the US government I would like to thank you and Romania for having made this decision.”

The Ambassador also met the Muslim leaders of the Uzbek refugees and with a group of female refugees who offered him some traditional handmade gifts.

Romania offered to temporarily house the Uzbek refugees in August 2005, until they could be accepted as refugees by various countries, including the United States.
