The gift
J.Beth Ciesielski

Today those who love, try to show their loved ones how much they mean to each other.

There are all kinds of love of course, Plato's idealized form of love of the mind; platonic love. Then there is the love of affection, respect and concern. But what one most thinks of is the love of great passion. All these forms can include the element of loyalty which when referring to a relationship; like to the country one was born in. This loyal love can take the form of patriotism. But is this patriotism only an abstract literary concept? Is the Patriotism we have here in Romania only a quick heated display of false passion to the media that is easily forgotten in the morning? Or do we have a love of country that is much more enduring? A loyal love that shows we really care for what happens to this country? The events of the last dozen years reveal that we have few public leaders who demonstrate any real affection for this country. There is so little self control, so little honesty, so many lies and such great hypocrisy.

Six months ago a Romanian friend asked me what I thought of this country and I replied with angry sadness, "What do I make of Romania today? To be direct and not to hurt you....It is an immature country of selfish, unprincipled, greedy, arrogant, incompetent, stupid and sly political leaders who are all tied to each other by constant and continuing daily acts of corruption. They are afraid of each other because they know they are each unethical and so they tie themselves closer together with increasing unlawful actions...so it is next to impossible for anyone to break away from the pack."

I wanted very much to be proven wrong. Unfortunately, the last weeks have only emphasized the ugly truth in what I wrote. We have seen the enemy of this country and it is our leaders. Those highly educated, most cultured, and amazingly rich MPs in our Romanian Parliament have shown clearly that they are strongly against giving final authority to the first anticorruption agency since the "revolution" that actually investigates anyone in any position....like them for instance? They don't want this? Quelle surprise!

All the time they have been mouthing the fighting words, "Fight Against Corruption!" weren't they really adding, oh, so sotto voce, the additional word, "investigations"? Now their real interest in preventing any real justice is revealed to the world. The Romanian Parliament of The Lists, members appointed to political party lists based on allegiances to protect only each other, have left no doubt of their true intentions: "We say , NO TO CORRUPTION INVESTIGATIONS".

Adrian Nastase is shocked! Shocked that as he is a great hero of his country, a former Prime Minister, no less, that he is actually to be questioned about the source of his wealth...to be forced to allow ordinary people to evaluate all the stuff that somehow he has accumulated on his government salary? He calls on all his friends to verify his honor. (Silence.) Social Democratic leader Mircea Geoana speaks about his honor for an hour in the old communist style of boring people to death. (More Silence). And George Copos, an appointed Minister in this government, is so defiant; I don't need a lawyer. I am just a very clever businessman good at selling high my businesses that are not profitable and buying low property that I can sell for much more. So what if the buyer and seller is the same, the Romanian government. What does that signify?

Has anyone noticed how expensive silence is? All of us want to know, where is the honor in all these "smecher" land and stock deals?

PSD: "The Party for the Good", clever Geoana, so ingenuously claims. We should erect statues in their honor, 'To our glorious heroes,' who love this country so much that they want to take it all with them to Switzerland where they can put all that is valuable here in some secret bank accounts there, where they can count all their pearls and diamonds in private, enjoying the feel of five Rolexes on each of their arms, and who so sweetly remember to send us back their undying love on all our national holidays.

I am most willing to exchange them for all the students who have left Romania for a better education and jobs based on merit. Can we strike a deal here? All politicians who want to conceal all their undocumented wealth, please leave today and never come back, in exchange for the return of all of our best and brightest. Please remember that all the airports have security machines which register any metal objects you might try to take with you. So please leave your guns, our crown jewels, goldmines, banks, oil trucks, and hotels behind you. I assume that the great man, Nastase, has plenty of other treasure maps for you guys to follow.

We might really have a wonderful country after you all leave for new grazing grounds.

I prefer that the love of hypocrisy from corrupt politicians and businessmen of all political parties be thoroughly unrequited by the people. That we refuse to accept such insincere attentions, that we do not act as though this is our fate to be abused and mistreated by those who claim they act only for our benefit. To accept the misery of Romania society today is an act of surrender. Is anyone really willing to surrender this country to chaos?

So President Basescu, will you as President of a country on the edge of a great precipice, will you approve the official status of the National Anti- Corruption Agency? (DNA) Will you make such an important gift to your country on this Valentine's Day? Will you mandate an agency that will legally investigate anyone, no matter who he knows or how much he blusters and threatens, no matter what political party or how rich or how famous? They say the real gift of love is the gift of truth, for one must love to find the truth. And this would really not be a gift, we are entitled to it and we expect this now.
