CfP: Church and Politics in the Romanian Society of the XXth
Century, Bucharest, June 10-11, 2006
Deadline: April 15th, 2006
Working language: Romanian

The Interdisciplinary Group for the Study of Religions at the
Institute for Political Research (University of Bucharest) is
organising, on June 10th-11th, a conference on : Church and Politics
in the Romanian Society of the XXth Century.

During the last several years, a number of studies have appeared
dealing with the issue of the relationship between religion and
politics in Romania.

The churches in Romania and the entire Romanian society have passed,
along this last century, through the experience of several
totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, which left their mark on
Romanian contemporary history. How did these experiences influence
the life and experience of the Churches in Romania? What is their
heritage? And what happens with these Churches after the fall of
that regimes?

The purpose of this conference is to offer a reevaluation of
existing research directions and the investigation of new such
directions. Thus, considering the nowadays crisis of the theory of
secularization – the central explanatory paradigm, in the Western
literature in this field, for the evolution of the situation and
role of religions in the life of contemporary societies - , bringing
together researchers of several fields for a debate on the above-
mentioned issue may contribute to the forging of a working paradigm
accounting also for the situation of religin in the Central and
Eastern European area.

Are invited to apply researchers in the fields of history, political
sciences, theology, sociology, law, anthropology, etc concerned with
these issues.

For a more thorough approach of the specific problems of each period
and accounting for the different aspects of this relationship, the
conference will have three working groups:
1. Church and politics in the interwar period;
2. Church and politics under communism;
3. Church and politics during the post-communist period.

These panels may be subject to reorganization, considering the
applications received.

The conference will take place at the Institute for Political
Research of the University of Bucharest (Spiru Haret str., no. 8).
The scientific board of the conference will include professors of
the Political Science Department of the University of Bucharest:
Prof.Dr. Daniel Barbu, Director of the Institute for Political
Research, Prof. Dr. Stefan Andreescu and Conf. Dr. Radu Carp.

The organizers will cover the cost of accomodation and meals for all
participants.

Deadline: Applicants are invited to submit until Aprin 15th, 2006,
a 300 words abstract of the paper they wish to present at the
conference and a short CV (1 page at most). The abstract should have
