Gabriel Resources: NGO's claims based on incorrect information

The Toronto-based company that intends to extract over 300 tons of gold and 1,600 tons of silver in the Rosia Montana area, Gabriel Resources, yesterday responded to a statement made on Tuesday by the head of the Open Society Foundation, Renate Weber. The latter expressed her criticism against the company's mining project, pointing out that her organization will use all legal means to fight it. This was the NGO's response to the company's invitation to take part in debates on the recently released environment impact assessment the company put together and sent to the environment ministry.

A Gabriel Resources release yesterday said the company has carried out large efforts to inform all parties affected by the Rosia Montana mining project. Moreover, the company's vice president, John Aston, sent an open letter to Weber, expressing his company's surprise that her NGO's opposition to the project is based on incorrect information about the project.

Thus, the letter points out the debates the Open Society Foundation refused to attend will tackle essential issues such as Romania's need to a social and economic development, the concept of responsible ecological administration and the need for beneficial corporate activities and a strong civil society to be supported.

"Instead of making statements based on prejudices about our project, we invite you to take part in a meeting with us to discuss the way of approach," the letter said, adding that a real dialogue is necessary because there are a lot of misperceptions about the project.

Aston underlined that the NGO's attitude of making statements based on incorrect data does not respect its intention of promoting an open society in Romania.
