Rosia Montana mine closes temporarily
Mihai Istrate

The state-held mining development Rosiamin, located in Rosia Montana, Alba County, will remain inoperative until at least the beginning of next year. According to Alba Deputy Prefect Clement Negrut, the mine and the mud-setting pond in the Rosia Montana area will be made safe by 2011. For now, said the Alba official, the greatest problem is the ecological recovery of the zone, of the mud-setting pond in particular. The Ministry of the Environment allocated for this purpose funds totaling 1.17 million euros.

The Rosia Montana exploitation was closed at the beginning of June with more than 400 employees being made redundant. The mine had accumulated a very important debt because of a lack of contracts. The last remaining workers will guard the mine's machinery and pond until the closure process is complete. After the closure of Rosiamin, the only remaining functional exploitation in Alba County will be Cuprumin Abrud. In recent years, authorities shut down two other mining operations functioning in Zlatna and Baia de Aries, Zlatmin and Ariesmin.
