President <http://www.nineoclock.ro/index.php?page=detalii&categorie=politics&id=20060 706-506046> Basescu on official visit to the US on June 26-28 published in issue 3717 page 1 at 2006-07-07 BUCHAREST President Traian Basescu will be making an official visit to the USA in July 26-28, invited by American President George W. Bush. The bilateral talks will be aimed at strengthening our strategic relations with the United States and stepping up economic cooperation. In the Presidential Administration communiqué it is indicated that the visit, part of this years top level meeting agenda, is taking place exactly one year and four months after the previous trip to Washington of President Basescus, in 2005. This visit is happening in the context of the closure of negotiations for the ratification of the Access Agreement on the deployment of US military capabilities in Romania, of the improved cooperation within NATO, and also with a view to the preparations for the Riga NATO Summit, as well as of the continuation of Romanias contributions to providing regional and internationals security. The objectives of the trip include discussing the various ways to consolidate the strategic relations between Romania and the USA as allies in NATO and in the fight against terrorism, as well as the joint interest in upholding security and stability internationally and in the region. During the dialogue with the representatives of the White House and with the Romanian community, the aim of Romanias inclusion in the Visa Waver program will be pursued. We must remember that, in the past few days, several Bucharest-based newspaper including the Gandul and Gardianul have published speculations according to which the reaction of President Basescu to PNLs proposal regarding the withdrawal of the Romanian troops from Iraq should be explained exactly through the interest of the head of the state in arranging this new Romanian-American top level dialogue. However, diplomatic circles in Washington said that the details of the visit had been arranged around two weeks before the surfacing of the conflict between the two palaces in connection with the subject. In other words, the tough retorts exchanged in Bucharest have influenced neither the decision regarding the visit, nor the agenda of the visit.
