BUCHAREST, Romania — President Traian Basescu flew to Washington on July 26 to discuss military bases the U.S. will set up in Romania.
Basescu, speaking before he left, said he would also discuss with President Bush and other officials an oil pipeline from Central Asia to Europe that will cross the Black Sea.
“The main topic is evaluating the military bases to be built in Romania,” Basescu said. He will meet Bush on July 27.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Romania’s Foreign Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu in December signed a 10-year agreement to set up four military bases.
The facilities to be used by the Pentagon include the Mihail Kogalniceanu air base near the Black Sea, which the U.S. has used in recent years as part of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Other installations in the agreement include Babadag in the Black Sea inland region, Cincu in the mountains of central Romania and Smardan in eastern Romania, which will be used for all types of weapons training.
Up to 1,500 rotational troops will use the Mihail Kogalniceanu base at any one time. No details have been given about when the bases will be operational.
Basescu will also likely discuss the presence of Romania’s 890 troops in Iraq. Last month, Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu said he wanted to withdraw the troops, but was overruled by the country’s top defense officials. It is negotiating with the U.S.-led coalition to reduce its troops to 620.
Romania is a staunch ally of the United States and Basescu pledged to strengthen security ties with the U.S. and Britain when he came to power in 2004.
