BUDAPEST, Aug 1 (Reuters) - A Canadian open-cast gold mine project in Romania's Rosia Montana poses a serious threat to the environment and should be abandoned, Hungarian Environment Minister Miklos Persanyi said on Tuesday.
"It is also in Romania's interest that the project should not be carried out," the minister said in a statement published by the national news agency MTI after he met Romanian ambassador Ireny Comaroschi.
Canada's Gabriel Resources (GBU.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) submitted an environmental study in May to the Romanian government about the large-scale project which has been delayed for years by protests from green groups and concerns by neighbouring Hungary.
