In a press conference yesterday the Culture Minister Adrian Iorgulescu announced preparations for Sibiu 2007 Cultural Capital have entered the final stage. Last week the Government allotted the sum of RON 47 M, meant to cover the most important events.

According to Minister Iorgulescu, at least five events of capital importance are to be organised during next year of which the most important ecumenical meeting, meant to bring together 3,000 religious leaders and priests of all confessions and a meeting in Sibiu of southeastern Europe heads of state, set for May. Regarding the ecumenical meeting, Minister Iorgulescu said the ministry is in talks with Vatican officials, regarding the possible visit of Pope Benedict XVI during the event.

Other highlights include a number of 40 events put up in collaboration with another town elected as European Cultural Capital in 2007, that is Luxembourg. Other important projects that are meant to be finished by the end of this year is modernization of the Sibiu airport terminal. Also according to the Minister, next year are expected to visit Sibiu 1 million people, both from the country and abroad.

The initial projects for 2007 European Capital were addressing a number of 5000 Romanians and 50 million foreigners, of whom only one million are expected to visit.

One of the recent controversies regarding Sibiu was related to the sheer absence from both libraries and bookstores of tourist and promotion literature for the city which is to bear for one year the honorific title of European Capital.

The Minister has issued a 30 minute CD with a presentation film, which is issued for commercial puposes in and out of Romania. As for the other books, guide books or maps of the town, which would normally have to be on sale by now, the ministry says this is entirely an issue of publishing houses.
