Just came across this website which I found absolutely fascinating - an index of countries in the world, based on how efficiently they convert the earth's resources into years of 'happy ' human life:

It seems to show that moderately developed countries are generally 'happier' than countries of either high or low development. And also, on page 29 of the report, is a graph indicating that wealth and strong government do not correlate with life satisfaction in Europe. Factors that correlate the most are creativity, loyalty and adventure.
