Vulnerable Romanian children 'put on sale'
VULNERABLE Romanian children abandoned in institutions are being housed in appalling conditions while others are being offered for sale for a few thousand pounds, it has been reported.
Youngsters were given a price-tag of just over £5,000 each and offered to reporters from ITV News, it was claimed.
The systematic neglect of children and some adults with mental or physical disabilities was also discovered in institutions by journalists posing as aid workers. They also found hundreds of babies abandoned in hospitals.
Reporter Chris Rogers describes in a report how he and his team were offered children in the remote village of Tiqeet. Posing as foreigners looking to buy babies, a village elder acted as a mediator and introduced them to a woman who first put up her three young children for sale, then a baby she had abandoned in a hospital.
The news team agreed a price of £5,300 for the infant but left without paying. They were later introduced to a pregnant 17-year-old girl who wanted to sell her unborn child.
When the news team posed as aid workers they claim they discovered a string of state-run institutions where the children and young people were looked after in appalling conditions.
