An international congress of the History of Religions, which will bring together 150 specialists from around 30 countries and will take place between September 20 and 23 in Bucharest, according to the Minister of Culture Adrian Iorgulescu. The event is the first meeting of this kind in a country in Southeastern Europe.
"Romania has a beautiful tradition as far as the theory of religions is concerned, through the contributions of Mircea Eliade and Ioan Petru Culianu," Iorgulescu said. He added that the ministry will contribute with a part of the expenses for organizing the congress, meaning 35,000 euros. Among the events organized within the congress there is also a concert directed by Cristian Mandeal, which will take place at the Romanian Athenaeum. According to Andrei Oisteanu, president of the Romanian Association for the History of Religions, "in Romania, the history of religions has also had many failures, besides the peaks it had. Now, a new generation is trying to organize the biggest European congress of this kind through the quality of its participants."
The central theme of the debates is the Religious History of Europe and Asia. The events will include ten conferences, held by some of the best specialists in the world such as Giulia Sfameni Gasparro, Charles Long, Andrew Louth, Lawrence Sullivan. Among the Romanian personalities who will be part of the supportive scientific committee are Andrei Plesu, Horia Roman Patapievici, Andrei Marga, Sorin Alexandrescu, Ioan Panzaru, Zoe Petre and Foreign Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu.
According to Oisteanu, the theme of religions is always current because of the conflicts that have appeared in various cultures. "The history of religions is a domain that is not related only to archeology or culture, but also to the present. Today, we cannot exist without understanding cultural orientations," he said.
In the press conference that announced the event, Minister of Culture Adrian Iorgulescu said he intends to propose to Minister of Education Mihail Hardau, that a state university in Romania should establish a history of religions department. "My intention has in view the necessity that history of religions should be taught in Romania as well," Iorgulescu said.
