Romania's Oscar entry welcomed with enthusiasm

Romania's entry for the Oscars, Catalin Mitulescu's "How I Spent the End of the World" was screened in an advance premiere on Thursday evening in Bucharest and was received enthusiastically by those present.
After making its world premiere on August 30 in France, "How I Spent the End of the World" was screened first for the public in Bucharest at Cinema Studio, and was applauded for minutes on end by film critics and the public alike. Pleased by the public response, director Catalin Mitulescu, winner of a Palme D'Or in 2004, leading actress Dorotheea Petre, and the three children who appear in the film went on stage to respond to the public.
"I have seen the movie in various cinema halls. I feel that certain things are understood and others are not. This evening I felt that many things have been understood. I am glad to have made this film and I hope it will have many spectators in Romania," Mitulescu said.
Writer Andrei Plesu said Mitulescu deserves an 'A' for the way in which he made the film, but added there is still an "inertia" in Romania to make films about Ceausescu. "I feel that now a generation of Romanian filmmakers who are supported and do their job naturally has been born, something that has not happened for years," Plesu said.
"How I Spent the End of the World" tells an emotional and at times humorous story of a brother and sister from a neighborhood on the outskirts of Bucharest, in the last days of communism. "Catalin Mitulescu is sailing on the memories of a teenager who has lived this end of the world. He is outstanding in setting a shade of nostalgia, a time of hope. The memory of first loves, of neighbors, of the loaf of bread with margarine and molasses, all these exude from this film. It is a very fluid film," said film critic Magda Mihailescu.
Seventeen years since the execution of Ceausescu, the director brings to the foreground the memory of that period. However, the events are seen from the perspective of a 17-year-old girl, Eva (played by Dorotheea Petre), and her seven-year-old brothers. "I think what is important is that the film is convincing through the story and through the characters. It is a love story, an emotional film," Mitulescu said.
For the role of Eva, a high school student from 1989 Bucharest, actress Dorotheea Petre received the award for best female interpretation at the Cannes Film Festival this year, in the Un Certain Regard section. The cast also includes Timotei Duma, Mircea Diaconu, Carmen Ungureanu, Jean Constantin, Grigore Gonta and Florin Zamfirescu.
The screenplay was written by Andreea Valean and Catalin Mitulescu and cinematography by Marius Panduru. The executive producers are Martin Scorsese and Wim Wenders and the score was composed by Alexander Balanescu.

Mitulescu prepares new film for next year

Director Catalin Mitulescu's next project is a film about the love between a thief and a maid from Constanta. "Un Balon in Forma de Inima" (A heart-Shaped Baloon) will begin filming in the spring of 2007.
This project received at the end of August one of three awards annually presented by CineLink - the annual market of co-production and a workshop for project development of the Sarajevo Film Festival. The film will be Mitulescu's second feature-length film. The script is also the product of a collaboration, co-written by Mitulescu and Bogdan Mustata and will be produced by Les Films Pelleas from France.
