The Romanian educational system does not manage to answer the needs and wishes of students, according to a sociology study on the values of Romania's youth. The study, made public yesterday by the British Council, shows that most of the young people interviewed believe that education is important, but that "it is not school that offers real education."
Razvan Crisan, the executive director of ORICUM (Anyhow), the group that conducted the study, said that most young people define education as "something that completes school" or "something that means more than school."
There are very few cases of young people who go to school for pleasure or because they are aware of the steps they have to follow to achieve a career, the study shows. Most of those interviewed said they go to school because they have to obtain a diploma, regardless of what school they wish to attend.
The students who were interviewed said they hope to obtain the necessary skills required for a desired job by attending specific training classes organized by companies or by becoming familiar with the duties of the job after they get hired.
The hierarchy of things Romanian youths hold important is as follows: family, friends, school, money and society.
The study also shows that high school students identify family with "moral and financial support" and that there are very few cases in which students responded that family is the most important thing because they love their kin.
Friends are appreciated mostly by high school students, as they believe they will maintain ties with their friends for the rest of their lives.
The organizers of the study said they were surprised to find that most young people, especially those living in big cities, think money is a source of injustice. On the other hand, young people living in smaller towns are more aware of the importance of money, "as a means, not as a purpose," saying that money is the only solution to fighting poverty in their community.
The results of the study, which was conducted between March and June this year in six cities and towns, were discussed by students and journalists yesterday in the presence of UK Ambassador Robin Barnett.

An aristocratic title is not enough to ensure a noble behaviour. A person's greatness comes from acknowledging the mistakes and agreeing to correct them.
