Bucharest Francophone - the name of culture

Dana Milea

Between September 22 and 30, the francophone world descends on the streets of the capital city, as shows, concerts, outdoor film screenings and exhibitions of art from the francophone countries will take place under the title of Bucharest Francophone.

An Antoine Bourdelle exhibition, a performance of Eugen Ionesco's "The Bald Singer" that has been staged by the Theater de la Huchette and a "Digital Carpet" through which passersby will be virtually projected in other capitals, are just a few of the events that will take place in Bucharest during the Francophone Summit.

"We are mainly interested in the young public because the essential message, which has also been promoted through the communication campaign, is "Parlez-vous Francais?" And if you don't speak French, come and discover the francophone world," said Cristian Preda, the state secretary for francophone issues, in a press conference yesterday.

The Antoine Bourdelle exhibition that will open September 27 and will remain open until January 28 will present at the National Museum of Art several works of the French sculptor. The National Art Museum also opened at the beginning of the month an exhibition entitled "Constantin Brancusi - photographer," presenting photos Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi took of his work. At the same time, the museum is hosting an exhibition of "Image and Writing in Belgian Art."

In another exhibition, Several books by the first president of Senegal, Leopold Sedar Senghor, will be presented on September 20 at the Museum of Romanian Literature in Bucharest. A parallel event will be an exhibition of photos about Senghor, who is considered a symbol of the francophone world.

"Leopold Sedar Senghor - the poet-president" is one of the events that take place in Romania on the occasion of the Francophone Year to mark 100 years since Senghor's birth. Senghor (1906-2001), who served as the first president of Senegal from 1960 to 1980, left his mark on the history of the 20th century as for over half a century his political activity has been linked to the francophone world. The opening and the presentation of the books will be attended by representatives of the embassies of Belgium, Senegal, Tunisia, France and Brazil in Romania.

The "digital carpet" project will permit the public to be placed in other Francophone cities, through an installation on a street in the city. According to Cristian Preda, this kind of event has attracted hundreds of thousands of participants in Paris.

Other examples of merging technology and art will be a Labo-mix "Everything moves," an interactive show that combines choreography, theater and new technology and Bucharest's Pret-a-Porter fall collection in which artists will combine imagination with technology to present the city from 63 different perspectives.

Revolution Square will vibrate with pop, rock, hip-hop and classical music rhythms, as outdoor concerts bring together 16 artists from the francophone musical world.

For theater lovers, the destinations in the last week of September will be the Odeon and the National. On September 25, the Odeon will host Eugen Ionesco's "The Bald Singer" - a show that has been playing since 1957 at the Huchette Theater in Paris, while the National will host two premieres "Le Bougeois Gentilhomme" (an adaptation of Moliere's play) on September 26, 27 and 28, and Albert Camus' "Misunderstanding," directed by Felix Alexa, on September 28. The members of the delegations present in the 11th Francophone Summit are all invited to these shows.

Participants in the summit are also invited to a show performed by Romanian gymnasts. The show is entitled "A Perfect 10" and will take place at the Palace Hall on September 27.

According to Cristian Preda, the Bucharest Francophone program has two dimensions: one is "a cultural recollection from the 19th century up to the present" under the influence of French culture, and the second one is related "to something that is less known in Romania, a cultural diversity that covers not only French culture but the entire Francophone space."

The entire program of cultural events included in the Bucharest Francophone Summit is available online at
www.bfranco.ro, which does not have an English version.
