Most communist orphanages have been shut down

The orphanages that shocked the world in the first years after the fall of communism where children were chained to their beds have been closed, according to the Child Protection Office.

Romanian authorities have adopted major reforms in this field and have significantly improved conditions in the orphanage centers, according to a Reuters report.

The fall of communism in Romania revealed shocking news to whole world about 100,000 orphans living in dilapidated buildings, poor conditions, without proper food and many of them being chained to their beds so that they would not move around. Most of these care centers were the heritage of the communist regime, the news agency reports, quoting a councilor at the Child's Protection Office.

Rodica Paslaru said that there are only 30 orphanages in the country, each sheltering approximately 100 children, but pointed out that they are going to be shut down or repaired and modernized. Paslaru did not say what the deadline for this modernization process is.

Last year, Romanian government voted a ban against international adoptions, following the recommendation of the European officials, concerned that the many children were being trafficked, not adopted.

American officials have put pressure on the Bucharest authorities as many families were unhappy with the government's decision to halt the adoptions.
