Romanians are too attached to their
country to leave it for good, so European countries should not fear that
Romanians will invade the labor markets, said Minister of Labor Gheorghe Barbu
in an interview with Reuters news agency.
Barbu said that several
European countries are exaggerated in their fear that large waves of Romanian
migrant workers will invade foreign labor markets after Romania's EU accession,
scheduled to take place at the beginning of next year.
The minister stressed
that the wave of Romanians will not be similar to the wave of Poles that
migrated to EU countries when Poland entered the union in 2004.
He pointed
out that after the accession Romania will be one of the largest EU states yet
maintains a low unemployment rate.
Barbu also said that the level of
unemployment in Romania is five percent, and this along with Romanians' strong
sense of family, are two important factors that will keep Romanians from fleeing
the country in herds, as some international publications have suggested.
He
also said that those who go to look for jobs in the EU will do so in order to
accumulate money and will then return to Romania.
"Ninety percent of the
Romanians that work abroad return home," the minister said.
Statistics show
that in the past few years about two million people have left the country to
find jobs abroad.
There is a strong debate in several EU countries regarding
Romanian workers' access to the EU labor market. One country that wants to
impose short-term restrictions is Britain, according to British Home Secretary
John Reid.
Britain did not impose restrictions on citizens of other former
communist states which joined the EU in 2004, and the resulting tide of
immigrants has fueled calls from some sectors in Britain to restrict
immigration.
"As global migration increases and the EU continues to expand,
we need to be ready for fresh challenges - including in the law enforcement
field," Reid said in a speech to the Police Superintendents'
Association.
"That is why we need to manage immigration carefully, including
in respect to the forthcoming decision over Romania and Bulgaria," Reid
said.
