The Romanian Peasant Museum began Thursday the program of events with which it celebrates "one hundred years of singularity" - 100 years since the establishment of the institution.

October will be a month full of celebrations for the museum which will include a series of exhibitions, colloquiums, book and DVD launches and will culminate with a party attended by friends of the museum.

The first event in the list is the colloquium entitled "Museums and society" which will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will bring together European museologists who will debate the problems between museums and society.

The museum will host Monday the opening of a Swedish exhibition entitled "Raoul Wallenberg - One man can make a difference" which tells the story of the Swedish diplomat who saved the lives of thousands of Jews in Budapest in the period of the last phase of the Nazi occupation. His life will be evoked through objects, photos and films.

The museum will erect October 13 an anniversary bronze medal in the presence of people from the cultural and political environment.

The grandest celebration, however, has been scheduled for October 28, when the Peasant Museum awaits its friends for a party with music and an anniversary cake with 100 candles.

Bucharest – The Museum of the Romanian Peasant started on Thursday a program of events celebrating “a century of singularity” – 100 years since the institution was founded. The museum’s director, Vintila Mihailescu, made a sum-up of the activity “of the museum on the Highway”. Andrei Plesu, in his capacity as “spiritual kin of the museum”, praised its activity so far, saying that the institution is the place where the Romanian peasant can be found “in all his power.”

“There is a debate going on about this museum (…), its object is about to disappear – the Romanian peasant is about to disappear, or to go to such radical a transformation that you find it hard to recognise him anymore,” Plesu said. “Yet, this museum has managed something quite unusual” to breathe new life into its object, to bring him to life again,” he said. The Museum of the Romanian Peasant (MTR) celebrates this month 100 years since its founding through a series of exhibits, colloquia, book launches and DVDs, to peak with a party alongside all the museum’s friends.

The first event on the list is the colloquium entitled “Museums and the society”, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and will join experts in European museology that will debate the relations between museums and society. The event will also been an occasion MTR officials will award President Traian Basescu the Cultural Merit Order in rank of grand Officer for promoting culture.

The Swedish exhibition “Raoul Wallenberg – One man can make a difference” will open on Monday. The exhibit presents the story of Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat that saved the life of thousand of Jews in Budapest, during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. His life will be evoked through objects, photos and films.

An anniversary bronze medal - The Museum of the Romanian Peasant – will be launched together with a diploma during a festivity to be attended by cultural and political figures.

The DVD “Museum on the Highway”, a documentary about the history and achievements of the institution, will be launched on October 20. Also, the Gherghina Costea exhibit of ceramics – “Terra Incognita” will open on October 26. The grand celebration is scheduled for October 28, when MTR invites its friends to a party with music, fun and an anniversary cake with 100 candles.
