Different departments in 
newspapers don't always talk to each other as deadlines approach. The results 
can be dislocated going on humiliating (or cherishable). Here's page 77 of a 
particularly cherished Daily Mail. 
Welcome 'to one of the property hotspots for 2007', 
says the section in question. Inflation 'is in single digits and the economy is 
flourishing' - with 'miles of uncrowded sandy beaches' and a capital they call 
'Little Paris' because of its 'tree-lined boulevards and belle epoque 
buildings'. No wonder TV's A Place in the Sun voted it 'the top place to 
quadruple your money in 10 years'. 
Yes it's Romania, featuring Vlad the Impaler and Bonnie Prince Charlie, 
the organic property speculator. Retired couples seeking peace and quiet should 
pile in fast. 
But turn to page two, where the Moldovans are coming, 
apparently. 'Experts' have scared the Mail witless by predicting that '600,000 
Romanians and Bulgarians may come to the UK for work' once they're part of 
Europe next January. Now 300,000 Moldovans, it seems, 'have taken advantage of a 
special arrangement that allows them a Romanian passport' [their parents were 
Romanian], so they're coming too. Cue ritual paragraph about 'sex slaves' and 
ritual quote from MigrationWatch. 
Does anybody explain why hundreds of thousands should 
flee this Transylvanian paradise; why cheap flights are great for taking grey 
Brits to the sun, but lethal for bringing EU citizens back; why the citizens of 
Little Paris should prefer Little Huddersfield; why wily Romanians shouldn't 
join HRH and Camilla in multiplying their money? Ah, property...Where one 
flight's bleak menace is another's princely civilising opportunity.
