BOTH Romania and Bulgaria have chosen women as their European commissioners when they join the European Union next year, a commission source said today.

The names of Romanian Justice Minister Monica Macovei and Bulgarian European Integration Minister Meglena Kuneva have been submitted to Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, the source said.

If approved, they will join the 25-member team heading the EU executive branch in January 2007.

"Those are proposals," the source said.

"Barroso has now to give the green light."

Under EU law each member state has one commissioner in the EU's executive body.

The source declined to say what policy portfolios the new commissioners would receive.

Romania and Bulgaria will join the EU on January 1, 2007 in the second wave of enlargement into ex-communist eastern Europe.

Ms Kuneva was a key player in Bulgaria's often difficult negotiations to join the EU and Ms Macovei has won respect for her efforts to fight often rampant corruption in Romania.
