Secretary Of State Leonard Orban Is Romania’s New Candidate For EC Job - Sources

BUCHAREST, Oct 29

Secretary of state with the Ministry of European Integration, or MIE, Leonard Orban, is Romania’s new candidate for the position of European Commissioner, with the announcement being expected Monday both in Bucharest and Brussels, official sources told MEDIAFAX Sunday.

The sources said this is the only proposition which Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu sent to the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, after foreign affairs minister Mihai Ungureanu refused to accept his nomination saying he wants to finish his mandate.

Orban, former chief-negotiator with the European Union, was in charge with the technical details of Romania’s EU accession negotiations.

Tariceanu said he sent to Jose Barroso the letter with Romania’s new proposition, following the withdrawal of senator Varujan Vosganian’s bid to occupy the position.

The spokesperson of the presidential administration said president Traian Basescu and the PM met on Sunday morning and discussed this new proposition for the EC position, before sending it to Brussels.
