Gorbachev's characterizations of the leaders of other nations are also
telling. Of then East German leader Erich Honecker, he said: "react calmly,
whatever he says about us." Romanian dictator Nicolai Ceausescu he described
as "mentally confused, nothing but mush; to hell with him," and Libyan
leader Moammar Gadhafi as an "adventurer who acts as if he were the head of
global revolution -- we will certainly not embark on a third world war for
his sake." Gorbachev's comments about the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, the
Soviet Union's gulags and his military's adventurous efforts to strike out
on its own are all telling.
