travel to Romania

College Misericordia students partnered with Romanian Children's Relief and
Broken Heart Ministries as part of the graduate-level course, 'Childhood
Development in an International Setting.' Erin Moravec and Kristin McClain,
undergraduate students, and Lauren Amirault, Linda Gallagher, Marci
Carovillano-James and Ellyn Podlowsky, graduate students, joined adjunct
faculty members Amy Lynch, MS, OTR/L, and Joan Surfus, MS, OTR/L, for the
first service-learning trip to Bucharest, Romania.

The students worked with hospitalized children, volunteered at a maternity
hospital and living center for people with Down's syndrome, and conducted
home visits to provide therapy for children with disabilities.

The faculty from Misericordia also provided direct training to 36 Romanian
staff members who provide therapy to children with sensory integration.

Misericordia is establishing a fund to support future student experiences in
Romania and provide materials for those served by the trip. Donations can be
sent to College Misericordia, Occupational Therapy Department, c/o Ellen
McLaughlin, OT department chair, 301 Lake St., Dallas, PA 18612-1090. From
