Un articol interesant in ziarul britanic "The Northern Echo". Un articol
care dezvaluie un alt beneficiu pe care il poate aduce voluntariatul -- de
data asta voluntarului in sine, pe care il ajuta sa-si schimbe viata in bine
prin asumarea de responsabilitati.

Trial

A DEFIANT teenager is refusing to return from Romania to face a criminal
hearing because he is "turning his life around".

For the past ten weeks, Stephen Baker has been working for a volunteer aid
organisation helping underprivileged families in the former Eastern bloc
country. It is a far cry from his life in the North-East, where he has
previously been involved in anti-social behaviour.

The 16-year-old was due to appear at Teesside Magistrates' Court later this
month for criminal damage. But he has refused to return because he believes
his stint in Romania - the first time he has ever been abroad - is putting
his life back on track.

At a hearing earlier this week, his mother, Sharon, from Middlesbrough,
asked for the trial to be adjourned, but magistrates refused. Chairwoman of
the bench Carole Freeman Dunn said: "We had to balance the interests of
Stephen and the interest of justice." The court heard that magistrates had
relaxed bail conditions, including an electronic tag, to allow him to go to
Romania on December 16.

Charity worker Rod Jones is behind Convoy Aid, which set the challenge for
Stephen to make the changes to his life.

Last night, Mrs Baker said Stephen had declared he would not be present for
his case. She said: "He is not trying to avoid the trial. He just wants to
stay out there for another five months to make sure he has got his head
straight.

"He loves having responsibility and has told me his life has changed for the
better. "Why should he come back when he is rehabilitating himself out
there?"

She added: "While he has been out there he has repaired roofs, built walls
and collected firewood for the village. He gets up early on a morning and
that's not like Stephen."

Stephen, of Mitford Close, Middlesbrough, is due before Teesside magistrates
on February 26 and the case could be heard in his absence.
