###FOCUS###

Let's get down to business!
===========================
With just over five full-time researchers for every nine in the United
States and ten in Japan, the EU has got some catching up to do. The
comparative lack of researchers is particularly visible in business,
with almost a third fewer researchers employed in this sector compared
to the US! Practical changes are needed to turn this around, to help
researchers find a job and to keep the European Research Area
competitive internationally.

>From Russia with Love
=====================
A Russian researcher was hoping to travel to Sweden to carry out
research at an institute there. However, with little experience in the
practicalities involved and with few administrators, the would-be host
institute could not offer much assistance to the travelling professor.
And the researcher himself had little time to make enquiries and the
necessary arrangements for his move. Where could he turn for advice?

###SUCCESS STORIES###

Give us a (tax) break!
======================
At one time or another, most of us are likely to have complained that
we are paying too much tax. However, for international researchers
moving to or from Estonia, this may in fact be true. Thirteen of
Estonia's numerous bilateral tax agreements with other countries
include a special clause which exempts teachers, professors and
researchers from income tax for two years. Until very recently, this
was far from common knowledge.

An excellent result: European researcher returns
================================================
After spending several years working on biophysics in the United
States, Austrian-born Robert Schwarzenbacher felt ready to return to
Europe. Looking for the opportunity to lead his own scientific team in
the field of protein structures, he began to hunt for funding to turn
his dream into reality. Thanks to frequent discussions with fellow
researchers in San Diego, the professor had heard about the Marie
Curie Excellence Grants…

A positive reaction: Indian chemical scientist makes it to Spain
================================================================
When Ralte Lalrempui, from Mizoram in India decided to undertake
research in Spain, he thought he would have enough on his plate with
the language barrier and differences in culture. But then he came
across another obstacle – he needed both a work visa and official
approval of the PhD he had gained in his home country, and it turned
out that the latter would not be so straightforward to obtain.
