universities and industry informed about the latest developments
concerning researchers in Europe.

###NEWS###

Connecting Continents
=====================
The European Career Fair brings students and graduates from top
American universities in contact with the top echelon of employers in
Europe. The largest event of its kind in the US, the fair will be held
in Cambridge, MA, on 2-4 February 2008.

The Rocard Roadmap for Science Education - Getting Youth Interested in Science
==============================================================================
Science awareness and training is essential for the creation of a
knowledge economy, ensuring progress, innovation and productive
employment. The EU has made great strides, but there are still
insufficient numbers of scientists, technicians and engineers entering
the job market. One way of tackling the challenge is by focusing on
the young.

Getting the most out of FP7
===========================
The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) represents a quantum leap in
research opportunities. Getting and staying involved can prove a
tricky task however. Now a new course is being offered in Italy that
gives tips about how to improve project design and management in FP7.

###FOCUS###

Breaking the Glass Ceiling in Research Decision-Making
======================================================
Gender inequality persists in the higher echelons of research. An
analysis of senior university staff since the 1990s reveals a serious
dichotomy in career outcomes for men and women. Men are three times
more likely than women to reach the top level positions in research.

Online consultation; offline realisation
========================================
The European Research Area (ERA) concept combines: a European
"internal market" for research, where researchers, technology and
knowledge freely circulate; an effective European-level coordination
of national and regional research activities, programmes and policies;
and initiatives implemented and funded at the European level.

How to keep women committed to industrial research
==================================================
Based on the interest expressed by the companies participating in the
first Women in Science and Technology (WiST) working group, the
European Commission has decided to continue the initiative, which
started in January 2005. The renewed initiative gives more companies
the opportunity to join the group while expanding it to the academic
world.

###SUCCESS STORIES###

Charting the way to success at the University of Camerino
=========================================================
The European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the
Recruitment of Researchers (hereafter C&C) were recommended by the
European Commission in March 2005. The purported aims: making research
an attractive career, by giving the same rights and obligations
throughout the European Union and improving recruitment. The
University of Camerino was early in adopting the C&C and, by all the
evidence, is now reaping the rewards.

celebrated in Brussels on 12 March 2008 during the European Science
Awards ceremony.
