He threw the pet from the balcony of his fifth-floor apartment in a fit of rage. A German man is going to jail for killing a cat. A Berlin court sentenced the 37-year-old man, identified only as Torsten F., Wednesday to seven months in prison for breaking the animal protection law. "We have to give a clear signal," said the judge, Monika Pelcz. "People who are feeling bad cannot take out their frustration and anger on the weak." The public prosecutor had wanted to let Torsten F. off with a €1,000 ($1,540) fine, but the judge insisted on a custodial sentence as a deterrent to others. "Brutal violence must be punished with significant sanctions," she said. Torsten F. threw the cat, Popeye, from the balcony of his fifth-floor apartment in an East German-era tower block in the Berlin district of Marzahn on Aug. 24, 2007. The two-year-old cat died a painful death in the building's courtyard. The man defended his actions by saying he had "short-circuited" after getting annoyed about a mess the cat had made in the apartment.
