The Associated Press Tuesday, July 8, 2008 VIENNA, Austria: A European media watchdog is pressing Romania's president to veto legislation that would require radio and TV stations to ensure half of their coverage deals with good news. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's media freedom representative says the bill is "a severe political intrusion into editorial freedom." Miklos Haraszti urges Romanian President Traian Basescu in a letter to veto the bill. The OSCE representative released the letter to the public Tuesday. Nationalist lawmakers in Romania's parliament drafted the legislation requiring broadcasters to make sure 50 percent of their coverage consists of "positive news." Leading Romanian journalism unions have also condemned the bill.
