Questionnaire on Teachers’ Evaluation - How and when are teachers evaluated? - There are a number of ways in which teachers are evaluated. Heads of Department are responsible for ensuring the day-to-day delivery of the curriculum and quality of teaching. This is done through departmental meetings, lesson observation etc. All teachers are subject to ‘Performance Management’ annually where targets are set and previous targets evaluated. This is done in conjunction with the teachers’ line manager, usually the Head of Department. This will involve lesson observations along with other indicators. All departments are subject to Departmental Reviews where public exam results are analysed and performance evaluated. - Government Inspections occur every 3-6 years depending upon the nature of the school and its performance. Lessons are observed but the main criterion is evidence supplied by the Senior Management Team for their judgements on school. The results of these inspection can have very serious implications for the school and, therefore, the teaching staff. - Who evaluates the teachers? - See above - What are the criteria for getting a job? - Most jobs are advertised nationally (Times Educational Supplement) and locally in newspapers. Teachers have to complete a letter of application. - Sometime candidates are appointed internally but there are strict rules governing what jobs have to be advertised to ensure fairness. Teachers are interviewed by the Headteacher, Senior Staff and School Governors. The type of interview will depend upon the post. All candidates will be expected to have a degree and a post-graduate qualification. - Individual schools will set the criteria for the job. Candidates are expected to address these in their letter of application. - What are the requests when applying for a job as a teacher? - See above (letter of application, attend interview, teach a sample lesson etc) - Who establishes the teacher’s salary? - There are national government assigned salary scales. Schools decide the pay level of teachers depending upon responsibility, experience and retention amongst other things. - Example: I have been teaching 15 years so I am at the top limit of the pay scale (experience). I have passed through the ‘Threshold’ which means my competence has been assessed and more pay awarded. I am Head of Geography and therefore paid for this (responsibility). There are other factors too. The website below may help. - http://www.tda.gov.uk/Recruit/lifeasateacher/payandbenefits/salaryscales.aspx Richard Coles Cordeaux School Louth UK
