Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu welcomed new US Ambassador to Romania
Mark H. Gitenstein, who presented his letters of accreditation today (Fri).

The Foreign Ministry announced in a press release that the two had talked
about bilateral relations.

Gitenstein said Washington highly appreciated good relations with Romania,
one of the USA's closest friends and partners in Europe.

Gitenstein had been sworn in as ambassador on 5 August.

US Vice President Joseph Biden did the honours in the Indian Treaty Room of
the Eisenhower Executive Building where the office of the vice president is
located.

The ceremony was attended by several American officials, as well as by
Romanian Charge d'affaires Cristian Gaginsky.

In his remarks on the occasion, Gitenstein used several Romanian words in
addressing the Romanian diplomat, as well as in talking about his memory of
his Romanian-born grandparents. He said in Romanian that he would be
returning home to his origins, to the places where his grandparents and
great-grandparents had lived.

"It is not only a great honour to represent President Obama, but it is also
a return to the place from which over a century ago my grandparents came to
America, and it is to them that I today pay tribute."

"To my great-grandfather Lewis Bralower and my great-grandmother Celia
Bralower from Braila and Iasi, to my grandmother Rose Bralower and
especially to my father Seymour Gitenstein. At age 94, he still lives in my
home-town of Florala, Alabama."

"I saw him the weekend before last, and the essential quality I see in him I
see in those who live in Romania today. A tough, resilient, determined
people who have been through a lot but who have never lost their sense of
humour and their love of life," Gitenstein said.
