Where's the Tourist Information Office?
Aug 13th, 2009
by <http://www.bucharestlife.net/about-2/> Craig Turp

We got a phone call yesterday lunchtime from an angry American (we think)
who wanted to know what we had against the Tourist Information Office in
Bucharest. He was in his room at the Hilton, had a copy of
<http://www.inyourpocket.com/romania/city/bucharest.html> Bucharest In Your
Pocket, and had been through all 84 pages yet was unable to find the address
of the Bucharest Tourist Information Centre on any of them. He said that he
had used In Your Pocket guides in a number of cities around Europe and that
in every city we printed the address of Tourist Information. He reasoned
(and not without a certain logic) that we had either left it out
deliberately, or that we had simply left it out through carelessness and
that we were therefore not as good as other In Your Pockets (an accusation
he made).

The real reason that we do not publish the address of the Tourist
Information Centre (because there isn't one) never occurred to him. And when
we told him as much, he refused to believe us. In the end we told him that
if he was so sure there was a Tourist Information Office in Bucharest he
should to go and ask the concierge at the Hilton where it was, and then
phone us back with the address so we can publish it in the next issue.

A day later he has yet to call us back. We will not hold our breath.

In a city with as many problems as Bucharest it could be argued that not
having a Tourist Information Centre is no great loss, and that the city
council is better off spending its money elsewhere. Perhaps. Yet the city
council should have nothing to do with the matter. It is the Ministry of
Tourism which should be creating a network of Tourist Information Centres
around the country. That's the kind of thing we thought Ministries of
Tourism did.

Not here, at least not in Bucharest. There is one in Brasov, on Piata
Sfatului, but that's run by the city council. The Ministry of Tourism is
busy spending its money on
