The multilateral assistance package, including the €5 billion loan by the European Union, has helped improve the economic conditions and outlook in Romania by easing financial tensions and external financing pressures. But the recent improvements would not have been possible without the measures adopted, and accepted, by the Romanian society. I'm confident that the Commission will be able to transfer the second loan instalment of € 1 billion soon, which had only been postponed because of delay in adopting the 2010 budget. This year should see a return to growth in the EU and in Romania but the effort needs to continue, notably for what concerns the budget deficit, to ensure a stronger and more sustainable economic activity in the future," said Joaquín Almunia, European Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner.
