Romania Defence And Security Report Q2 2010 - New Market Report Published New report provides detailed analysis of the Defence market Published on February 25, 2010 by Press Office (Companiesandmarkets.com and OfficialWire) LONDON, ENGLAND Political instability has continued in Romania. 2009's election led to a two-month political crisis, with a marginal win by President Basescu declared in December. Such electoral turbulence, involving fraud allegations, threatens public confidence in the ruling administration. Although the economy is still in deep recession, it has passed the worst, with GDP data for Q309 showing a reduction in the pace of decline. Strong investment levels should combine with robust private spending to keep real GDP growth at an average of 5.0% over the next five years. However, the unemployment rate is high (6.9% in September), and is likely to increase during 2010 (to a peak of 8.5%). Unemployment will weaken consumer confidence and spending, and will be another major concern for the electorate. The European Commission believes that Romania needs more reforms to meet EU norms. According to Transparency International, in its 2009 Corruption Perceptions Index, Romania has failed to improve in its anti-corruption efforts. They believe that 'the risk of corruption in the country has increased since the start of negotiations for European Union accession'. The country was equal last out of the 30 European countries in the 2009 Corruption Perception Index. The Romanian defence industry, although relatively small, is attracting interest from foreign firms, especially since joining the EU. However, reduced corruption, enhanced legal infrastructure and more efficient regulation would make the industry a better investment opportunity for foreign companies. The industry is facing increased competition, especially from Russia and China. The Romanian military is embarking on a long-term modernisation programme, expected to be complete by the end of this year.
