[...] Traian Basescu, talking about cutting expenditures and the huge budget deficit Romania is facing: "I haven't paid attention to the issue until recently, when I've been announced we've already reached the deficit target and that, if we go on with such expenditures, we would reach a 11.7 billion euros deficit, by then I said where are these expenditures going? Only then I requested information and I tried to understand."
So, Traian Basescu is president for almost six years, but only a few weeks ago he became interested in the situation of the budget. It could be true, after all, these issues are dealt with by the executive. But let's recall that, at the beginning of 2008, when the pension point increase was discussed, the same president warned Romania will face problems in two-year time as amounts needed from the state budget to fill the social insurance budget will overpass two billion euros. We understand that the president was informed about the budgetary problems by then. One year later, in 2009, the same head of state became a supporter of increasing teachers' salaries by 50 per cent. By then is looks like he was not aware of the problems the budget deficit was raising. (It is true the electoral campaign for the presidential elections was close!) Now Mr. Basescu is interested again in budgetary deficit. Such an amazing president! May we wonder for how long? And should we learn that the head of state did not only try to understand (as he said) but more than that, he understood the issues at last?
