Um, shayne, that's already been done.  Look for the functions 
buffer_output() and unbuffer_output().  
   
 However, I'm perfectly ok with splitting up server command functions into 
frontend/backend pairs so that they can be used by other code.  Quite a 
bit of that has been done already (such as cmd_user() and 
CtdlLoginExistingUser() for example -- those two functions used to be 
one).
