completely off topic but i'm chiming in too: i think all those points are negligible now. i've had too many personal nightmares with mysql and close friends with dozens more. i simply don't know of anyone handling large amounts of data with mysql and NOT having several dedicated staff to deal with mysql and data integrity alone. i know of lots of people who have large amounts of data with postgres, and only need a dedicated person for optimizing. for small stuff, not a problem. for large stuff, i think it is -- which is why i'm a little shocked at the original poster. i'd be scared shitless to be dealing with an 18M row mysql db myself. if there were a team of people, sure -- i know lots of places that have a bunch of db people and easily handle that much data comfortably. but if it were just me, i'd be running postgres. if i had a project that needed a fast turnaround with good speed and data-integrity was not important, i'd use mysql. the second data integrity becomes an issue, i just don't think mysql has proven itself to reliable enough for 'just me'. it could be different: if i'm looking at getting a bunch of VC cash , and can hire a fulltime db person or two, and they worry about mysql and applicaiton logic to enforce integrity, then fine. when i started my business i wasn't though, so I opted for postges if i'm tossing the project off to someone else and its their nightmare, then fine. but when i do a consult job now , I don't want to be on call. I don't want to know I'm getting a phonecall and need to drop everything. so i'll gladly forgoo some of the 'mysqlisms' that make solutions faster/easier to implement. i'm happy spending 15% longer in postgres, with queries that run 2-5% slower , knowing i've got something more reliable on the outset there's no cure for that-- unless someone wants to grant me 250k so i can have a db staff. // Jonathan Vanasco | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | FindMeOn.com - The cure for Multiple Web Personality Disorder | Web Identity Management and 3D Social Networking | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | RoadSound.com - Tools For Bands, Stuff For Fans | Collaborative Online Management And Syndication Tools | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
