They should set the  
"CRAZY_DEPRECATED_BACKWARDS_COMPATIBLE_MODE_ENABLED" variable.  ;-)

Whatever the fix, I agree with Graham that it should be phrased in  
terms of "defaults are only used when inserting new objects" rather  
than "undef sets null".

I liked your idea of having an explicit way to say "set the default  
value", although I don't have a use case for it on hand.
