RE: resetting the path quicker.
I ran into this as well and ended up changing the path map in the registry,
in an effort to avoid having to load the entire model.
I then discovered that it doesn't care if your model is loaded... it just
wants the current model loaded. At that point I just used an empty model,
changed the pathmap and then loaded my original model again. At that point
everything was fine.
