Victor,
You can turn hierarchical numbering on/off from the Tools->Options Menu,
then select the Diagrams tab.
If you are starting with a sequence diagram, you can create the
collaboration diagram by pressing F5. You will need to relocate the
objects on the diagram to make it more readable. Same is true for creating
a Sequence Diagram from a Collaboration diagram, press F5. If the current
diagram (either) has hierarchical numbering the one created from it should
as well.
However a word of caution with hierarchical numbering. There are times when
working with sequence diagrams that the hierarchical numbering gets messed
up due to relocating/re-ording messages, between objects, etc. To fix the
numbers (re-number them), first do a save, and backup the .mdl/.cat file.
Next, select the message (closest to top), that the numbering is incorrect
for, and do a ctrl-d. That message and all of the messages in its hierarchy
should disappear (be deleted) from the diagram. Next select Edit->Undo, and
you should see that message along with its hiearachy re-appear, this time
with the corrected numbers. This works most of the time for me, however,
there have been times where this would not work.
