Process change is, like software development, best done in an
incremental-iterative fashion. Our normal advice to customers is to
identify their main opportunities for process improvement and concentrate on
fixing those pieces first. Refer to the previous note from Number Six
Software's Brian G. Lyons for further discussion on this approach.

The current version of RUP includes a roadmap for implementing an essential,
lighter-weight version of the full process framework. This lightweight RUP
is suggested for consideration by smaller organizations and projects.

Hi

I would recommend you take a look at a lightweight, developer-friendly
process like Extreme Programming (try http://www.objectmentor.com) as you
may well find that RUP can be a lot to take on board even in a small pilot
project. It's vital to focus on WHY you need a process, and to adopt the
best practices that all OO processes are based on. Bear in mind that XP,
Catalysis, Cleanroom and RUP (and many more) are all different flavours of
the same thing. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses. You
should seek advice, but first you must clearly set out the goals you have in
mind and particularly how you can measure your success. For example, do you
want to reduce the bug count per thousand lines of code, or do you want to
improve your scheduling and resource estimates, or do you want to better
ensure that your code satisfies the business requirements?

Don't get too bogged down in a particular named-brand process because many
projects have failed trying to "do it by the numbers".

Good luck

Subject: (ROSE) Experiences introducing RUP

Hi,

Are there any people out there that can tell us of their experiences
introducing UML/RUP to their company?

We are a language technology company (about 20 people), have some
experience with visual modeling in Rose, but now we would like to switch
our "ad hoc" (my manager will kill me if she reads this) software
engineering method to RUP ("ad hoc" is fairly Ok for smaller companies, but
now we are growing...).
Our current idea is to try to use the RUP in a small pilot project and then
we will decide how to continue (yes, I've read the RUP HTML documentation).
Does this fit in the "good things" or in the "bad things" category? Ok, in
theory yes, but in practice?

Thanx in advance,

Remco
